Weekend Activities in NYC

In the amNewYork paper (http://www.amny.com) that I read most mornings, since it’s conveniently placed at the subway stop and it’s free, there’s a section of outdoor activities around town.  Every time I read the section I think to myself how I’d like to do one of these things one day so this weekend my goal is to accomplish that.

The activities that I’m interested in (and there are many more) are:

Ongoing — Brooklyn Bridge Boot Camp, Brooklyn Bridge, 646-354-0039, $15 for first-timers.  This boot camp workout prides itself on being NYC’s toughest and promises to change your body in five sessions.  Classes take place mornings, evenings, and weekends.  Sign up at http://www.brooklynbridgebootcamp.com.

Today — Kayaking on the Hudson, Pier 96, at 56th Street, 6pm August 4th.  FREE.  Join the Downtown Boathouse for instructional paddles and explore the Hudson River firsthand.  Wear a bathing suit or shorts and a T-shirt and know how to swim.  Bring your own kayak or use one of theirs.  No registration required.

Saturday — Early Morning Birding, Salt Marsh Nature Center, Marine Park, E. 33rd St. and Ave. U, Brooklyn, 8am, FREE.  Get fit and check out birds in their natural habitat at this ranger-led birding walk.

Sunday — Alley Pond Park Adventure Course, Alley Pond Park, Queens, 10am and 1:30pm.  This challenge course features low- and high-ropes-course activities.  Free programs are available on Sundays for ages 8 and up.

The bird watching, although at first it may sound boring or mundane, is something I see offered often and I really want to do it because it’ll give me a chance to take some photos and especially use my large lens.  It’ll also be cool to spend time outside very early in the morning and to have a guide to lead the way.
